Australian Forecast – Make the Most of the Sunshine Before Another Soaking on Tuesday

Published early Sunday, 23rd August 2026

New South Wales enjoyed a stunning bluebird day yesterday, Saturday, while Victorian resorts remained stuck in the clouds. They’ll get their fair share of sunshine today, Sunday, as high pressure crosses the Aussie Alps, providing a welcome reprieve after Wednesday and Thursday’s rain hammered the snowpack. Spencer’s Creek snow depth was down to 90.2cm on 19th August, and that was before the rain, so you can imagine how fragile things are now.

The weather stays fine on Monday, and you’ll want to make the most of it because another wet and nasty storm rolls through Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Rainfall totals of 20–40mm are expected, which will take another sizeable bite out of our already diminished cover.

Conditions gradually improve Wednesday, followed by an extended spell of mostly fine weather, before things turn stormier again later next week, with a hint of fresh snow on the cards.

Sunday 23rd August

A mint, sunny day as W-SW breezes turn N-NW. Any cloud lingering in western Victoria clears early. Marginal snowmaking temps and humidity, but we should still see some of the groomers getting a wee top-up from the snow guns early morning and overnight.

Monday 24th August

Fine with some high cloud and a stiff northwester.

Tuesday 25th August

It’ll be a rough one as a storm moves in from the northwest, spreading rain and strong-gale northerly winds over the Aussie Alps early morning. There’ll be heavy rain at times and lift ops will likely be affected, but conditions will start to ease from the west late in the day.

Wednesday 26th August

The day brightens as clouds and light leftover showers gradually clear for a sunny end to the day. Light S-SW breezes.

Thursday 27th August

A nice, fine high-pressure day with a W-NW breeze.

Extended Forecast

High pressure will dominate our synoptic charts through the weekend into early next week, fending off any approaching storm systems and bringing mostly fine weather. Although Buller may be clagged in at times this weekend due to W-SW winds pushing in clouds, before winds turn NW and pick up early next week.

The weather starts getting stormier from mid next week, from about Wednesday the 2nd September, with strong NW winds and rain building ahead of a likely cold change late in the week, with the potential for a little fresh snowfall the weekend of the 5th and 6th September.

That’s all from me today, folks. I’m firing out these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the season, and an extra update on Sundays during peak season. Have a great Sunday session, and I’ll see you back here tomorrow, Monday.
