ON THE GROUND REPORT

Sat, Aug 18, 6am: It is overcast this morning with light snow showers at times, that are set to increase this morning and there’s been around 2cms so far. It is currently -1.1 at the bottom of the Quad and -2.9 up the top where the wind is 45km/hr out of the west, the wind-chill up high is -14. There is a big blue band of moisture on the radar and it is heading our way, so snowfalls will increase this morning with 20cms expected during the day. Check the Grasshopper’s forecast for the details as snow showers should continue tomorrow. Visibility is poor and the wind is forecast to be in the 45-65km/hr range all day, so that will blow a lot of snow around in the open, higher areas and and some chair lifts may be on wind-hold. It is day to head for the trees with Centre Valley, North Perisher, Smidgins and Guthega the go today. The groomed runs will be fun this morning with layer of fresh snow on firm base while it will get better off piste as the day goes on. Take care on the road as is covered in snow and ice and chains wil be required – not sure how far down Kosi road they need to be fitted. The snow depth reading at Spencers Creek has cracked the two metre mark which is good news, the result being Perisher is extending its season to October 7 which includes the first week of school holidays. It is going to be a good day of storm skiing, so rug up, use your low-light goggles and have a great day. – Reggae
